*CALL TO WORSHIP                                                  Psalm 90:1-3; 10

Leader:   Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations.

People:   Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you

had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting

                to everlasting you are God.

Leader:    You turn us back to dust, and say, “Turn back, you mortals.”

People:    The days of our life are seventy years, or perhaps eighty,

if we are strong; even then their span is only toil and

trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away.

OLD TESTAMENT                                                        Isaiah 65:17-22

For I am about to create new heavens and a new earth; the former things shall not be remembered or come to mind.  But be glad and rejoice forever  in what I am creating; for I am about to create Jerusalem as a joy, and its people as a delight.  I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and delight in my people; no more shall the sound of weeping be heard in it, or the cry of distress.  No more shall there be in it an infant that lives but a few days, or an old person who does not live out a lifetime; for one who dies at a hundred years will be considered a youth, and one who falls short of a hundred will be considered accursed.  They shall build houses and inhabit them, they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit.  They shall not build and another inhabit; they shall not plant and another eat; for like the days of a tree shall the days of my people be, and my chosen shall long enjoy the work of their hands.

NEW TESTAMENT                                             1 Thessalonians 2:5-9

As you know and as God is our witness, we never came with words of flattery or with a pretext for greed; not did we seek praise from mortals, whether from you or from others, though we might have made demands as apostles of Christ.  But we were gentle among

you, like a nurse tenderly caring for her own children.  So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you have become very dear to us.  You remember our labor and toil, brothers and sisters, we worked night and day, so that we might not burden any of you while we proclaimed to you the gospel of God.

*GOSPEL READING                                                         Luke 10: 1-7

After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself intended to go.  He said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few, therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.  Go on your way.  See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves.  Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road.  Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’  And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you.  Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for the laborer deserves to be paid.  Do not move about from house to house.

Leader:  The word of God for the people of God.

People:  Thanks be to God!
