Restored:  A Message in the Mess-

                                                                          August 13, 2017

Personal Meditation:    “…Know your disease!  Know your cure! Ye were born into sin:  Therefore, ‘Ye must be born again’, born of God.  By nature ye are wholly corrupted.  By grace ye shall be wholly renewed.  In Adam, ye all died; In the second Adam, in Christ, ye all are made alive.”  John Wesley, Sermon XLIV; Original Sin.

WELCOME, ANNOUNCEMENTS AND GREETING

                                  Liturgist:  Rodney Ruff

*CALL TO WORSHIP                                                    Psalm 51:10-17

Leader:    Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right

                spirit within me.

People:   Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take

                your Holy Spirit from me.

Leader:    Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me

                a willing spirit.

People:   Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners

                will return to you.

Leader:    Deliver me from bloodshed, O God, O God of my salvation,

and my tongue will sing aloud of your deliverance.

People:   O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your

                praise.

Leader:    For you have no delight in sacrifice; if I were to give a

burnt offering, you would not be pleased.

People:    The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit;

a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not

                 despise.

OLD TESTAMENT                                                        Joshua 24:13-18

I gave you a land on which you had not labored, and towns that you had not built, and you live in them; you eat the fruit of vineyards and oliveyards that you did not plant.  “Now therefore revere the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness; put away the gods that your ancestors served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD.  Now if you are unwilling to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served in the  region beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”  Then the people answered, “Far be it from us that we should forsake the LORD to serve other gods; for it is the LORD our God who brought us and our ancestors up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs in our sight.  He protected us along all the way that we went, and among all the peoples through whom we passed; and the LORD drove out before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land.  Therefore we also will serve the LORD, for he is our God.”

NEW TESTAMENT                                                     Colossians 3:12-17

As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone  has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the LORD has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.  Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.  And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body.  And be thankful.  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God.  And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

*GOSPEL READING                                       Matthew 28:1-10; 16-20

After the sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb.  And suddenly there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord, descending from heaven, came and rolled back the stone and sat on it.  His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow.  For fear of him the guards shook and became like dead men.  But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said.  Come, see the place where he lay.  Then go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has been raised from the dead,” and indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him.’  This is my message for you.”  So they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples.  Suddenly Jesus met them and said, ”Greetings!”  And they came to him, took hold of his feet, and worshiped him.  Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”  Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them.  When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted.  And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you.  And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Leader:  The word of God for the people of God.

People:  Thanks be to God!
