OLD TESTAMENT LESSON                                            Exodus 16:1-4

The whole congregation of the Israelites set out from Elim; and Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had departed from the land of Egypt.  The whole congregation of the Israelites complained against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness.  The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the fleshpots and ate our fill of bread; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”  Then the LORD said to Moses, “I am going to rain bread from heaven for you, and each day the people shall go out and gather enough for that day.  In that way I will test them, whether they will follow my instruction or not.

NEW TESTAMENT LESSON                                          Hebrews 12: 1-2

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.

*GOSPEL LESSON                                                 Matthew 16:13-18

Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”  And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”  He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”  Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”  And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah!  For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven.  And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.

Leader:  The word of God for the people of God.

People:  Thanks be to God.

Isaiah 58:12b says, “you shall raise up the foundation of many generations”.  That is what the new program, “STRENGTHENING FAMILIES” can do.  It is brain-based, evidence-based and will be taught with scripture and prayer.  A small green flyer, along with a larger info sheet is in the parlor information area.  DVD’s are available in the office for $5.00 and the class is $15.00 if able.  Limited spaces available; pre-enroll in office.  Class begins next Sunday, 9:35-10:35, May 21st.  This will help all families, whether strong or struggling, singles, couples, grandparents, families, etc.

Have you found “Stiggy,” the elephant in the parlor yet?  He is sad.  Very few have taken the gift he is offering.  Healthy Congregations hopes you read his t-shirt with the important message and take one of his gifts to help you deal with stress and stay healthier.  Remember:  May is Mental Health month.

Heritage Harvest, FHSU Forsyth Library, Saturday, May 20, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Check out the flyer on the church office window.

Have you ever considered joining the Altar Foundation?  Gifts are based on $1 per year of Methodism in Hays, or $144 for 2017.  Gifts are endowed and grants are approved from the funds to further the mission of Hays First United Methodist Church.  Already a sustaining member…Thanks for joining!
